2022-2023 Housing Counseling Development VISTA

The City of Kankakee’s Economic and Community Development Agency is a department of Kankakee’s city government. Our mission is to improve the lives of Kankakee residents and enhance the economic vitality of the city through housing, economic development, and community development by facilitating local, state, and federal grant programs. Our Housing Counseling Development VISTA will provide support and assistance in expanding our Housing Counseling Program in the city of Kankakee. The goal of the program is to empower low-income residents to reach their housing goals. During service, the VISTA member will help ECDA build capacity through expanding our financial literacy education, streamlining our housing counseling one-on-one program and group workshops, and by increasing awareness of the agency’s programs. Our ideal candidate would be a self-starter who feels passionate about advocating for social justice. They would be familiar with further developing a start-up program, be enthusiastic towards helping folks rise out of poverty with a systems-level focus, and would understand how an individual’s social environment can impact their possibilities and choices. We are seeking someone who has experience working and collaborating with diverse populations, who is capable of synthesizing information and requirements from multiple data sources, and is able to maintain and manage multiple mandates. This Housing Counseling Development VISTA will be hosted by the Economic and Community Development Agency (ECDA) located in the City of Kankakee. The City of Kankakee’s ECDA is a part of the Housing Action AmeriCorps Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive customized training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program on Housing Action’s website.
