City of San Jose: Library VISTA

The San José Public Library (SJPL) develops and provides programs that spark public interest and encourage customers of all ages to explore and utilize library resources. Working in partnership with non-profit service providers and local school districts, the Library has found that significant deficits in learning are rooted in a lack of effective programs that support both children and adults. While physically located in one of the wealthiest regions in the nation, Silicon Valley, over 30% of Santa Clara Valley families live in areas of persistent and concentrated poverty. Children who are low-income, Latino, or African-American are at a significant disadvantage. While exceptionally diverse (residents are 34% Asian, 33% Hispanic/Latino, 27% White and 6% Other, and speak more than 50 different languages), City services need more targeted, culturally competent community outreach programs and trainings. SJPL is looking for a community minded adults to work hand in hand with Library staff to build library program capacity as an SJPL AmeriCorps VISTA. SJPL VISTAs will ensure Library programs and resources address critical community needs all while earning money for school. Under the supervision of a Library staff member, the SJPL VISTA will expand Library program capacity by evaluating and promoting current programs, developing engagement through volunteer service and community partnerships, and increasing program visibility though social media and on the ground outreach. Working at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, VISTA fellows have an opportunity to build local connections and ensure that branch programs and resources address critical community needs. This opportunity is perfect for those experience or interest in community organizing, developing and administering educational programming, volunteer recruitment and management, and resource development.
