UWCCR - Refugee Economic Empowerment VISTA
As a refugee resettlement agency, the IRC offers myriad support to newly arrived refugees. Immediate aid such as food and shelter is provided upon arrival, but more holistic programs, including employment services and vocational English classes, extend beyond this timeframe to help families become financially self-sufficient. The Refugee Economic Empowerment VISTA member will work directly with IRC Sacramento’s Economic Empowerment department helping refugees attain financial self-sufficiency. In particular, the VISTA member will support Economic Empowerment classes on financial literacy, job-readiness, vocational ESL, budgeting, and resume development, in addition to a Career Development Program that assists clients in accessing vocational training and certification. The position will focus on resource and partner development; coordination across offices; communications and logistics management for training, events, and program evaluations; and capacity development for all educational programming of the Early Employment team.

Member Duties : The first project that the VISTA member will support focuses on coordinating the development of Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) curriculum, Job Readiness Training (JRT), Financial Literacy Training, and other components of IRC Sacramento’s Adult Education programming. For the second project, the member will work to improve the JRT and VESL curriculum by conducting a landscape assessment of Adult Education programming of IRC offices in Northern California to identify areas of overlap and/or gaps and opportunities for increased coordination and alignment of services. The member’s third project will center on education coordination, logistics, and communication—including maintaining a participant database and mailing list and creating a monthly newsletter. The member will also research ways to share relevant information with clients, coordinate trainings and conferences, develop and implement plans to transition to in-person services, and conduct community outreach.
