Opportunity Council - NWYS Community Engagement VISTA

Northwest Youth Services’ (NWYS) mission is to “affirm youth experience and autonomy, as we work together to foster collective healing and justice, in order to dismantle the systems of oppression that perpetuate youth homelessness.” Since 1976, NWYS has served youth, ages 13-24, experiencing homelessness in Whatcom and Skagit counties. We support this effort by providing housing programs, serving as a connection point for critical resources, and offering essential care such as vocational readiness and behavioral health access. Activities undertaken by the VISTA will include: 1) Developing reliable community connections resulting in tangible resources, 2) Establishing policies and procedures for the processing of resources received, and 3) Building a network of community volunteers. These activities address poverty by creating a sustainable stream of tangible resources that help ensure quality outreach efforts, which are young people’s primary entry points into housing in Whatcom & Skagit counties. The Opportunity Council VISTA Cohort in Bellingham includes monthly team meetings, Professional Development opportunities, fun team-building events, and 4 annual Days of Service.

Member Duties : Support NWYS by expanding on the work of our Year 1 VISTA. There are three parts of the VISTA’s project. First, build relationships in Whatcom and Skagit county with local businesses that result in tangible resources for our youth. Network to build understanding of our needs and explain the benefits of ongoing collaborative support of our organization to these local institutions. Second, oversee the processing of tangible resources received and use this information to inform long-term planning. The strength of this system effects NWYS’ capacity to manage and distribute resources needed to each of our varied programs. Lastly, manage a system of community volunteers involved in resource processing and leverage community groups to meet the needs of our programs. Lead volunteer recruitment and on-boarding as well as manage a team supporting with resource processing.
