Practice Space - Program Coordinator

We are a non-profit organization for low-income youth and adults in the Bay Area that help them speak in a clear, engaging way that represents who they are and what they care about. Our mission is to support local youth to use their voice as a path for success, build confidence and community through communication skill development to advance inclusion, develop empathy, and elevate underrepresented voices in our community. We offer camps, school-based programs, private lessons, and organizational trainings that help practice communication skills to low income communities. Our programs help students of color to be authentic, inspire positive change, address social anxieties, and feel connected to others. Through guided instruction and coaching, we provide a fun and safe place to be creative, express voices, and listen to stories. The Practice Space opened in 2017 after six years of home-based coaching and public speaking instruction. The Practice Space supports over 800 students with affordable public speaking programatic services that would normally be too expensive to fund elsewhere. We offer scholarships to students to take advantage of these opportunities for free. Through techniques in storytelling, presentation, dramatic performance, persuasion and advocacy, and conversation, we support low income students of color to effectively express themselves. Philosophically, we believe being able to support students to voice their stories allows them to advocate for themselves and guide them to-and-through college. We believe that having a voice is a path out of poverty for our local community members. Our goal is to service low-income students of color as build their communication skills so that they feel confident enough to apply college, internships, and career opportunities. Given the lack of communication skill development in public institutions that service our community, we intend to fill this gap as a means of combating poverty in our community.
