Maryland RefugeeCorps_Silver Spring

The ability of refugees to overcome employment barriers and become financially self-sufficient in a short period of time requires tailored job placement services that are both intensive and culturally responsive. As such, the IRC in Silver Spring offering a service opportunity for AmeriCorps members to strengthen and expand IRC’s bundled services so newly arrived refugees, as well as refugees returning to the organization, have the skills necessary to obtain and retain full-time employment during their first year in the U.S., and are ultimately financially self-sufficient whereby income exceeds expenses.¿¿ Three Job Placement AmeriCorps at the IRC in Baltimore will further strengthen IRC Maryland’s economic empowerment programming. Each Job Placement AmeriCorps will work with 60 clients to place them in employment and help them to retain employment. AmeriCorps members will assist IRC staff to conduct client intakes and assessments; help clients fill out social security card applications and other benefits necessary for employment; work directly with clients to create employment plans and work with resettlement case managers to reduce barriers to job placement and job retention. Members will also assist with conducting sector specific research on industry hiring trends and strengthen communications with area employers; identify specific employment opportunities and guide clients through the hiring process. After hiring, the member will monitor job performance, wage levels and employer/ employee satisfaction, track and report client progress.
