UACE Manzo Elementary Ecology & Food Literacy Support

Ecology and Food Literacy Support will partner with the Manzo Ecology Program Coordinator and Food Literacy Program Manager to integrate Manzo’s ecology resources with classroom curriculum and deliver food literacy programming to students from across TUSD. Ecology and Food Literacy Support will 1) deliver garden and ecology programming to encourage STEAM learning and inquiry-based exploration among K-5 students, while growing and maintaining garden and ecology resources, and 2) increase nutritional knowledge and encourage healthy food choices among TUSD students and community via hands-on, experiential learning activities utilizing school gardens. This position has two distinct but related foci: 1) In collaboration with the Ecology Program Coordinator and teachers, Ecology and Food Literacy Support will facilitate the integration of Manzo’s on-site ecology resources (food production gardens, aquaponic system, chicken coop, native Sonoran Desert habitats, agrivoltaic research garden, rainwater harvesting systems) with standards-based classroom curriculum. This includes delivery of ecology-based curriculum inside the classroom and in outdoor learning spaces. This position also supervises daily ecology activities, supports the supervision of school garden interns from partner programs, and assists in maintaining ecology infrastructure. 2) In collaboration with the Food Literacy Program Manager, Ecology and Food Literacy Support will develop, prepare, and deliver nutrition education programming to Manzo students and students throughout the Tucson Unified School District. Nutrition education programming will take place in classrooms across TUSD that incorporate school gardens into their curriculum, as well as in the Food Literacy Lab, a field trip venue for TUSD schools that is housed at Manzo Elementary.
