In our service territory, one in five people is food insecure – meaning they may not know where their next meal will come from. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank seeks to bridge the meal gap, connecting individuals with the nutritious meals they need to succeed. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is the largest hunger relief organization in Northeast Ohio having served more than 404,000 people in Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake, Ashland and Richland counties in FY2020. We do this through both food distribution and SNAP outreach efforts. The Food Bank operates a community food distribution center, providing food and other critical grocery products annually to more than 1,000 local food pantries, hot meal programs, shelters, mobile pantries, programs for the elderly and other nonprofit agencies. We also prepare nutritious meals in our Food Bank Kitchen and take hundreds of calls a day in our help center, where we refer low income callers to local agencies and sign-up eligible Northeast Ohioans for the SNAP program and other benefits. Last year, through our outreach efforts, we helped almost 40,000 eligible people apply for public benefits. We continue to connect our clients to other non-profits to address the main drivers of food insecurity: housing, healthcare and employment.

Member Duties : As the VISTA Member at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, you will strategically implement new collaborative processes with health care sector partners for the Food4Moms project. The Food4Moms project is a collaborative effort between GCFB and Better Health Partnership (BHP) which aims to provide high-risk pregnant women receiving community health worker services with expanded access to high-quality nutritious foods and nutrition education. Working with BHP and community health workers, you will design and pilot a new customized ordering system, establishing client feedback procedures for the evaluation and refinement of programming. You will also write and develop materials necessary for onboarding pregnant mothers to the Food4Moms project and marketing the program to healthcare providers and community health workers. Through these efforts, you will expand programming impact in the community.
