Office of Rural Health, WY Dept. of Health

Wyoming has 17 (of 23) counties with fewer than six people per square mile (the most widely accepted definition for ‘Frontier’ by federal agencies); and the overall state averages 5.17 people per square mile. Forty-seven percent of Wyoming’s residents live in frontier areas of the state. With the exception of people living in Cheyenne and Casper, the remaining population lives in rural areas. As a result of our vast expanses of land and sparse population centers, healthcare access issues in Wyoming must be closely and seriously addressed. The Wyoming Department of Health has created the Rural and Frontier Health Section to respond to existing healthcare issues and build a frontier and rural healthcare system for Wyoming’s future. The VISTA member will assist the Office of Rural staff in assessing the recruitment assistance programs within the state and conducting efficiency tests to see their long-term viability. The VISTA will work with extensive amounts of data to create a report that will inform the Office of Rural Health what direction to head in for improvements in healthcare professional recruitment and retention in Wyoming.

Member Duties : Based in the spectacular Rocky Mountains of Wyoming, our VISTA member will develop an exploratory analysis of health professional recruitment assistance programs to understand the variety of models, identify successful funding mechanisms, and assess whether the ORH may be able to use, collaborate, or mirror these programs in the future. You will also conduct an analysis of the long-term effectiveness of the partnership between the ORH and Wyoming Health Resources Network, Inc. (WHRN). In addition, the ORH would like to conduct a comparison of the cost and effectiveness of the WHRN contract versus the cost and effectiveness of the Wyoming Healthcare Professional Loan Repayment Program, the Wyoming Provider Recruitment Grant Program, and the Wyoming State Loan Repayment Program. The final goal of the assignment is to reduce the health professional shortage that is adversely affecting underserved areas in Wyoming.
