Maryland RefugeeCorps_Baltimore Job Training

Job Training AmeriCorps in IRC in Baltimore will strengthen IRC’s economic empowerment programming and help prepare newly arrived refugees for the workforce by liaising with resettlement caseworkers to reduce barriers to employment and by administering up to 12 hours of job training activities to clients, individually or in groups. Each Job Training AmeriCorps member will work with 60 adult refugees. Service member interventions will involve providing cultural orientation and job readiness training JRT modules with topics such as understanding work expectations for attendance, punctuality, communicating effectively with one’s supervisor, job performance, compliance with workplace policies, taking initiative and professional grooming standards. Other interventions will include updating the existing cultural orientation and JRT curriculum as necessary, helping clients develop resumes; holding practice interview sessions; maintaining attendance records; and reporting on client progress. To measure performance, members will administer¿pre- and post-assessments to each JRT participant before and after the course. Because the challenges clients face during the critical first year of life in the U.S. can be very complex, AmeriCorps members will assist with training and placing clients in jobs and strengthen the wrap around services that are so essential to removing barriers to getting and keeping a full-time job. The supplemental services provided by AmeriCorps members will ensure newly arrived refugees, and those returning to the organization for additional workforce services, become financially self-sufficient whereby their household income exceeds basic expenses.
