OneJustice Homelessness Prevention Associate

OneJustice is an innovative and award-winning nonprofit that brings life-changing legal help to those in need, with the goal of transforming the California civil legal aid system. OneJustice works to build the capacity of all components of California's civil legal aid system to meet the needs of local communities and to ensure the availability of services for all. The Homelessness Prevention VISTA will play a crucial role in helping design and implement a legal clinic model that will empower Legal Aid Organizations (LOSs) to prepare tenants for their small claims court hearing. Once the current moratorium on evictions are lifted many landlords will seek to sue tenants in small claims courts to get back rent owed. Unlike general civil litigation cases, individuals defending themselves in small claims court cannot be represented by an attorney, and most are not familiar with the court system or the applicable laws to present their best defense. Low-income renters are at a disadvantage, in danger of becoming homeless, and risk falling into long-term debt based on the outcome of their case in a small claims court. OneJustice will implement the small claims legal clinic model with LSOs to educate and empower tenants to present their best defense.
