Stewards VISTA: NEEF - Homestead National Historical Park

Homestead NHP will partner with the 21st CCLC elementary program located in Beatrice, Nebraska. The park has a strong relationship with the Beatrice Public School District, providing field trip opportunities for teachers and students for years. The park previously partnered with the Beatrice Middle School and ESU #5. From the 2014-15 school year through the 2017-18 school year this partnership worked with 6-8th grade students once a month each year after school. Working with the Beatrice Public Schools 21st CCLC serving younger students will be a new extension of the partnership which will help us impact students at a younger age. We are excited to work with the after-school program that the 21st CCLC currently provides for students in Beatrice. This program will further the collaboration among these three organizations. Homestead NP staff—including the VISTA member will support the ESU#5 science education team in the development and implementation of the project and provide access to the park grounds and equipment as needed. The ESU#5 science education team will lead the development and implementation of the project’s student learning experiences and support the 21st CCLC leaders in providing learning opportunities throughout the year that extend the place-based learning experiences at the park. Homestead NHP’s existing STEM programs primarily focus on water quality, creating opportunities for new STEM programs that broaden learning and engagement that utilize the park’s natural resources. This project is designed to fill gaps in the existing STEM program offerings by attending to the rich and diverse living resources available on the park grounds. Biodiversity is an important topic to explore for students and provides abundant connections to STEM knowledge, skills, and abilities. The connection between humans and biodiversity creates authentic context to build a culture that values the environment while also improving student learning and achievement.
