Literacy Volunteers of IL - VOCAL AmeriCorps
 
 
 
LVI is seeking individuals to serve as Literacy Specialists in its VOCAL - Volunteer Outreach for Community Action in Literacy - AmeriCorps program. As Literacy Specialists, VOCAL members provide educational and economic opportunities to low literate adults in community and faith-based agencies throughout the metropolitan area. Within the programs, members serve as one-to-one and small group tutors in basic literacy, ESL and/or GED preparation, volunteer tutor recruiters, mentors and job search coaches. Members are also involved with community outreach, program planning, and social and volunteer engagement activities, development training consisting of data collection and management, tutor recruitment and retention, creating newsletters and public information materials, and grant writing. Optional training on a range of topics for all members is also offered once a month throughout the year.

Member Duties : As VOCAL AmeriCorps member, your service will focus on adult literacy programs offered to low-literate and limited English speaking adults and out-of-school teens. As Literacy Specialists, AmeriCorps members serve as one-to-one and small group tutors, become involved with volunteer recruitment and retention activities, and assist their partner organization in obtaining resources that will benefit the adults and families they serve.
