Health and Community Resource Specialist

The Virginia Department of Social Services’ goal is to promote the well-being of our citizens through the delivery of essential services and benefits to ensure families are strengthened, and individuals achieve their highest level of self-sufficiency. The VISTA project seeks to leverage resources and expects to benefit six offices, units, or initiatives of VDSS. VISTA Members serving through VDSS will be serving in the Healthy Futures priority area addressing the opioid epidemic priority area, food insecurity, child care subsidies, and supporting the strengthening and expansion of statewide networks for immigrant services and volunteer centers, and expanding the implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives across the service sector statewide. AmeriCorps VISTA members will contribute to the goals of the project by performing activities such as identifying family needs and assess the availability of childcare statewide; assist in the development and implementation of outreach strategies for a new SNAP Restaurant Meals Program to expand capacity serving low income elderly and those unable to shop for groceries or cook on their own; improve the statewide network for providing immigrant services in Virginia; develop and provide training on the substance use disorder initiative; develop Hunger Action Coalitions in every region of Virginia to pursue the goals of the Virginia Roadmap to End Hunger at the local level; conduct a comprehensive assessment of how diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts are being conducted across the service sectors statewide; and implement efforts to strengthen the volunteer center network statewide over the course of the VISTA Service Year.
