Taylor Creek Visitor Center Education Coordinator

The Great Basin Institute (GBI) is an interdisciplinary field studies organization that promotes environmental research, education, and conservation throughout the West. GBI enhances the community engagement through our Interpretative Association operation at the Galena Creek Visitors Center, a USDA Forest Service facility jointly managed by Washoe County. At Galena, GBI offers community activities and events, field studies for schools, and day and residential outdoor education programs for youth. The goal of the Galena Creek Visitor Center is to encourage understanding, appreciation, and appropriate use of the natural, cultural, and historical resources of the Galena Canyon area and the Mount Rose Scenic Byway. This program will extend STEM programming to Lake Tahoe Unified School District students, and implement Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives for STEM education programs offered by the Galena and Taylor Creek Visitor Centers.

Member Duties : This VISTA member will lead the development of educational programs for students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) to learn about STEM topics as they relate directly to the environment they call home. In addition, this VISTA will plan for the logistics of basing staff, volunteers, lesson materials, and student transportation in and around TCVC. The VISTA will also identify resources, such as local foundations, that support STEM education at Taylor Creek, and will assist GBI staff in securing these opportunities.
