Volunteer Capacity Building at SHFB- Rural Nutrition Program

Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin is based in Madison, and serves a 16-county area with the mission of Ending Hunger in Southwestern Wisconsin. We are part of the Feeding America network of 200 food banks serving every county in our country. Madison is ranked in the top 25 for the most bike-friendly cities in the USA. Madison and southwestern Wisconsin is a wonderful place to live, with plenty of lakes, wonderful outdoor recreation and friendly people. The Rural Nutrition Programs VISTA member will work primarily with our Mobile Food Pantry program to build capacity at mobile pantry sites, thereby assisting to provide volunteer leadership and stability. Our Mobile Pantry program supplements the work of food pantries, shelters, and meal sites that are operating in fixed locations. Working with a community partner, Second Harvest Foodbank provides the food at no cost, and volunteers of the mobile site then follow their sites distribution plan to work to distribute the food to participants. This VISTA Member will work in collaboration with staff and community partners to ensure that our mobile pantry sites have the volunteers to meet the needs of our rural communities and build the community engagement necessary for long-term sustainability of rural hunger relief initiatives. This will involve community assessment, development of recruitment materials and best practices, as well as supporting mobile pantries’ ability to track their impact. Ideal candidates will have experience with relationship building, strong communication skills, effective time management and organization skills. They should have the ability to work collaboratively with community members to identify problems as well as solutions. The position will give the candidate the opportunity to connect with community leaders, and gain community organizing experience and recruitment skills.

Member Duties : 1) Build capacity at mobile pantry sites to provide volunteer leadership and stability. Currently a Food Bank truck drops off food that is distributed immediately at mostly outdoor sites. These 28 mobile pantries lack consistency and need clearer expectations for volunteerism. This will include conducting a community assessment. 2) Based on assessment results, the VISTA Member will develop plans and materials for best practices for sustainable volunteer programs at mobile pantries, as well as assist staff and mobile pantry sites with volunteer recruitment. 3) Support mobile pantries' ability to track their impact, including developing non-intrusive ways to understand information about the clients they are distributing food to.
