Volunteer Capacity Building-Rural Nutrition/Partner Agencies
Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin is based in Madison, and serves a 16-county area with the mission of Ending Hunger in Southwestern Wisconsin. We are part of the Feeding America network of 200 food banks serving every county in our country. Madison is ranked in the top 25 for the most bike-friendly cities in the USA. Madison and southwestern Wisconsin is a wonderful place to live, with plenty of lakes, wonderful outdoor recreation and friendly people. The Rural Nutrition/Partner Agencies VISTA Member will focus on building the capacity of rural partner agencies in the 14 mostly rural counties in our service area. Many of our partner agencies are run by an aging and sometimes technology-averse volunteer core. This VISTA member will help them identify and leverage support, training and resources needed to continue their success. The VISTA member will work in collaboration with staff and community partners to conduct a community assessment and create an assessment tool to help partner agencies determine their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as expand community engagement in an effort to recruit more volunteers and expand the community knowledge of rural food insecurity and hunger relief initiatives. They will also create materials and processes to assist rural pantries in the recruitment, training, and managing of volunteers. Ideal candidates will have experience conducting assessments, including through use of interviews, and with relationship building, as well as have strong listening skills. They should have the ability to work with a diverse scope of people, and be self-motivated, creative and proactive. They will be able to create solutions in collaboration with the stakeholder, not for the stakeholder. This position will give the candidate the opportunity to connect with community leaders and to build their community assessment and organizing skills.
