Childhood Hunger Programs VISTA Member

Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin is based in Madison, and serves a 16-county area with the mission of Ending Hunger in southwestern Wisconsin. Madison is ranked in the top 25 for most bike-friendly cities in the USA, and is a wonderful place to live, with plenty of lakes, wonderful outdoor recreation and friendly people. This VISTA Member will analyze the best ways to build capacity of our Youth & Family Initiatives with the goal of identifying ways to intervene in child food and nutrition insecurity. Our service area has many school food pantries, kids' cafes, and backpack programs that provide school year and summer nutrition for children. The VISTA Member will work in collaboration with staff and community partners to assess the capacity, needs, and opportunities for utilizing various federal and local resources at different sites. This will involve conducting research, creating criteria for program expansion, as well as expanding evaluation to help partners assess the reach and impact of child nutrition programs. This position will also work to enhance the integration of child nutrition programs into existing health programs, as well as expand eligible persons understanding and participation in FoodShare, through the creation of an outreach plan. Ideal candidates will have experience with research, outreach, and relationship building. They should have effective time management and organization skills, and have the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders. This position will give the candidate the opportunity to learn about the root causes of child hunger, and to understand the efficacy of a variety of food and nutrition insecurity intervention methods, as well as the opportunity to build additional research and outreach skills.
