Eco3.21 Northern Minnesota Preparedness Red Cross VISTA

The VISTA member will have the opportunity to make a difference by supporting both planning for disaster resilience and programs that serve veterans and their families. The VISTA member will serve with the Northern Minnesota chapter of the American Red Cross, which serves communities across Roseau, Lake of the Woods, Beltrami, Clearwater, Mahnomen, Hubbard, Wadena, Cass, Crow Wing, Aitkin, Itasca, Koochiching, Saint Louis, Carlton, Lake and Cook counties in Minnesota, and Douglas County in northwestern Wisconsin; as well as seven sovereign Native American communities. Through Red Cross disaster programs, the VISTA member will have the opportunity to engage with preparedness work, including preparing at-risk homes and youth preparedness trainings. The VISTA member will learn the disaster response system, including how the Red Cross provides immediate assistance for families impacted by home fires or other disasters. In recovery work, the VISTA will have the opportunity to learn alongside experienced volunteer recovery caseworkers the systems that they will expand and refine, including identifying new community resources and making connections to build the capacity of the Northern Minnesota/Wisconsin volunteer casework team. The VISTA member will build disaster services capacity by recruiting and training volunteers from our communities, with a special focus on the 7 sovereign Tribal communities in the Northern Minnesota Chapter. The VISTA member will also assist the Red Cross Services to the Armed Forces work, including supporting low-resource Veterans living in nursing home setting & emergency communication casework.
