Eco3.22 CHUM2GO Food Distribution VISTA

CHUM is a 501(c)(3) organization in Duluth, Minnesota that serves people experiencing poverty and homelessness by providing shelter, food, housing assistance and other services, as well as access to the basic essentials for human dignity. CHUM Food Shelf is one of Northern Minnesota's largest food shelf operations, serves the public three-five days a week, and manages other distribution services for CHUM. CHUM Food Shelf is looking for a CHUM2GO VISTA to develop the operations and systems of CHUM2GO, our new food delivery program, and marketing it to the Duluth community. Through this role, the VISTA will have the opportunity to help refine the program model, build relationships with public housing partners and other community organizations, and support systems that serve low-income people facing food security issues. Covid-19 and its accompanying public health crisis increased the number of individuals facing economic instability and the number of homebound individuals. The pandemic's challenging and isolating circumstances required nonprofits committed to justice and compassion find ways to reduce service barriers and expand people's access to the resources we all need. CHUM Food Shelf has worked to do this by creating a mobile food program called CHUM2GO. CHUM2GO provides access to resources for people who otherwise would have difficulty acquiring them, such as families with young children, the elderly, people with transportation barriers, and people with health challenges. VISTA member will be part of the Ecolibrium3 AmeriCorps VISTA cohort serving in northeastern Minnesota. Although each member is serving in a unique position, all cohort members will participate in VISTA specific activities such as regular cohort meetings, professional development opportunities, and trainings. Additionally, cohort members can complete community service projects of their cooperative design.

Member Duties : Refine and Expand CHUM2GO- Assess and refine the delivery program with the Director of Distributive Services. This will require acquiring feedback from food shelf clients through surveys, phone calls and, eventually, in-person meetings, as well as engaging with and educating community organizations and individuals about the program through innovative communication and outreach strategies. The VISTA member will propose program modifications to better serve low-income clients. Manage Volunteers- CHUM's work wouldn't be possible without volunteers. The VISTA member will recruit food shelf volunteers and lead volunteer trainings with the Food Distribution Coordinator. Network Building - Expand CHUM's programs by engaging with other service providers and developing relationships with other community organizations serving low-income populations, ultimately increasing the distribution reach of CHUM2Go.
