NAHT Safe & Healthy Homes VISTA Project

Are you committed to social change? Do you want to protect and preserve affordable housing? Do you want to develop your skills as a community organizer? Apply today to become an AmeriCorps VISTA Tenant Organizer with the National Alliance of HUD Tenant's Safe and Healthy Homes Project! NAHT, a tenant-led, membership coalition of tenant groups in privately-owned, federally assisted housing, is the only national tenants organization in the US. NAHT’s Safe & Healthy Homes VISTA project seeks to build the capacity of tenants in privately-owned, federally assisted multifamily housing across the country, to form tenant associations and work to preserve affordable housing, improve health and safety standards, recover from the impacts of COVID-19 and increase resident awareness of their rights and responsibilities. VISTAs will serve as tenant organizers at local tenants' rights non-profits across the country. These local non-profits will constitute the VISTA host sites. VISTAs will be supervised by experienced organizers, practice foundational tenant organizing skills, and cement their knowledge of federal and local housing policy. VISTAs will perform activities such as: -researching subsidized housing at risk of converting to market rate; -door-knocking and distributing information to tenants; -supporting tenant leaders in convening building-level meetings to identify issues and form tenant associations; -assisting tenants in meeting with owners, HUD and other city/state housing agencies Host sites currently recruiting VISTAs include: -NYS Tenants and Neighbors (NYC) -Mass Alliance of HUD Tenants (Boston) -Mass Union of Public Housing Tenants (Boston) -Metropolitan Tenants Organization, (Chicago) -Greater Syracuse Tenants Network (Syracuse, NY) -Arkansas Community Institute (Little Rock, AR) -Durham CAN (Durham, NC)
