Exploratorium Program VISTA - The Learning Community

Founded in 2004, The Learning Community is a nationally-recognized public charter school that serves more than 574 K-8 students from Central Falls, Pawtucket and Providence, three of the four “core cities” of poverty in Rhode Island. As a result of the quality of our partnerships with families and our innovative teaching practices, our students are dramatically outperforming their peers, despite a poverty rate nearly twice the state average. 82% of our students are low-income, 94% are children of color, and 34% are English language learners. Our work has been recognized nationally by The NY Times, Washington Post, MSNBC Primetime, and Chelsea Clinton came for a visit. Our nation has grown to accept a link between poverty and student achievement. However, our students have closed the most significant student achievement gap between students of color and white students in the country (Annie E. Casey Foundation). Despite a poverty rate of 82%, which is significantly higher than both Rhode Island and Massachusetts, on the 2018 RICAS standardized test: The Learning Community’s low-income, Latino, Black and English Language Learners had a higher proficiency rate than their demographic peer groups in Rhode Island, Boston and throughout Massachusetts in both Math and English Language Arts. The Learning Community seeks a savvy, detail oriented, flexible and capable problem solver with demonstrated initiative, and excellent organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills to learn about our current out of school program and to add to and enhance the program. This member will work with the Extended Day Director to research and obtain new community partnerships, research new curriculums and create a system to organize previously used curriculums to efficient access.

Member Duties : The Exploratorium VISTA will work with our Extended Day Director to build systems and capacity during students’ out of school experience. In year one of this project, this VISTA will support the organization of the various community partners that are engaged with our Exploratorium program. This will include capturing information about our current partners and researching new community partners that could offer programing for our students. This VISTA will also research new curriculums that could be implemented into the main branches (i.e. lower elementary, upper elementary and middle grades). This member would research the curriculums and create training materials for the Exploratorium staff to be trained. All of the curriculum work would be captured on our schools’ server. This member would help to build out and organize all of these materials for efficient access and to have a library of materials to reference in the future.
