Community Building Housing Equity VISTA

The Neighborhood Developers, Inc. (TND) (http://theneighborhooddevelopers.org/) creates vibrant neighborhoods where people from all walks of life can thrive. Focused on three cities that abut Boston to the north (Chelsea, Revere, and Everett), TND delivers the following integrated programs to build equity and opportunity for both people and place: 1) Real estate development to expand affordable housing inventory; 2) Resident Services so that tenants in TND’s properties remain stably housed and use the platform of an affordable home to accrue social, health, educational, and economic benefits; 3) Community Building to elevate the voices of residents who have traditionally held less power, enabling them to shape the future of our communities and their own lives; and 4) Financial capabilities to increase the prosperity of community members. TND believes in both people- and place-based solutions to create great and thriving neighborhoods. Without an engaged citizenry, entrenched social and economic issues that impact community members in our target neighborhoods will remain. Rents have risen significantly in recent years and many residents face the threat of displacement in the communities that TND serves. Pre-pandemic, housing affordability was a growing concern, and COVID19 has only exacerbated that issue. In the face of the worsening housing crisis, residents came together in August 2020 to launch the Housing Equity Committee (HEC). With technical assistance and training provided by the Community Building Team at TND, members are learning about the housing issue and ways that they can take action. The Housing Equity VISTA will build TND’s capacity to support community members participating in the Housing Equity Committee by helping to formalize and systematize the group’s organizational infrastructure. The VISTA will research evidence-based approaches to tackling displacement and then develop a manual that guides committee activities.

Member Duties : This VISTA will build TND’s capacity to support community members participating in the Housing Equity Committee by helping to formalize and systematize the group’s organizational infrastructure. The VISTA will research evidence-based approaches to tackling displacement and then develop a manual that guides committee activities. In addition, the VISTA will assist with HEC member recruitment, and focus on the leadership development within the group, which will enable the committee to be self-sustaining and lead to increased civic engagement. The work of the VISTA will enable residents to confidently raise their voices and contribute to community decision making related to affordable housing. Some specific activities include: • Research and draft a memo regarding evidence-based approaches to tackling displacement. • Research and draft a Housing Equity Handbook that covers best practices for Housing Equity Committee activities. • Begin to cultivate committee leadership.
