Opportunity Council - Lopez Island JEDI & Affordable Housing

This is a joint VISTA project working with Lopez Island Family Resource Center (LIFRC) and Housing Lopez. LIFRC's mission is to provide resources and guidance necessary to meet the basic needs of the entire community. Building on this foundation of wellbeing, we also provide educational and engagement programs, and advocate for a more just and equitable community. Housing Lopez is a non-profit organization dedicated to solving the rental housing crisis on Lopez Island by developing dedicated, affordable, sustainable rental housing communities. The VISTA project will continue the work of past VISTAs, sustainably building capacity for Lopez Island Family Resource Center (LIFRC) and Housing Lopez (HL) in order to 1) expand and strengthen efforts that will provide affordable rental housing for low-income households on Lopez Island over time, 2) maintain and grow justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) work being conducted; and 3) provide general support for both organizations. This will help break the cycle of poverty by ensuring that safe, secure, affordable rental housing and more services are available, and that they are being provided in a way that promotes equity. The Opportunity Council VISTA Cohort in Bellingham includes monthly team meetings, Professional Development opportunities, fun team-building events, and 4 annual Days of Service.

Member Duties : The VISTA will divide their hours equally between LIFRC and HL. For LIFRC, the VISTA will 1) increase staff and board JEDI knowledge, 2) contribute to amplifying the voices of marginalized community members, and 3) help guide our programs, messaging, and other organizational aspects to a more JEDI-centered place. It is more important to LIFRC that the VISTA have strong JEDI values than that they necessarily have the "know-how" to carry out these tasks. For HL, the VISTA will 1) help identify exciting and innovative ways of solving Lopez's affordable rental housing crisis, 2) provide strategic and administrative support for the board and committees, and 3) support fundraising and grant writing work.
