Concrete Jungle Communications and Program Expansion VISTA

Concrete Jungle(CJ) began as a cider-making party that grew into a nonprofit that has brought over 1.5 million pounds of fresh food to Georgians who need it the most. CJ transforms overlooked and underutilized fruit trees and land into a healthy food source for communities in need. Since 2009, we have distributed over 1,750,000 pounds of fresh food through hunger relief organizations in Georgia. We have done this by: educating and engaging volunteers to identify and harvest fruit trees around Atlanta; gleaning from farms and orchards across Georgia; cultivating vegetables on our urban farm; providing produce education to clients; mapping fruit trees, expanding our programming to a branch in Athens, GA, and more. We started as a volunteer organization in 2009, creating fun, innovative ways to solve issues of food waste and food insecurity. Since then, we have grown into a 501(c)3 nonprofit with 4 full-time employees, several part-time staff and interns, and thousands of dedicated volunteers. Each year we increase our harvest by 50-200%. We believe we have been successful because of our very engaged and enthusiastic volunteers. In this position, CJ partners with Harvest Against Hunger, a program incubator and catalyst utilizing a team of AmeriCorps members in the Harvest VISTA program who build sustainable, community food security programs. These range from gleaning projects to regional food security assessments, to expanding community-run gardens and food bank farms. AmeriCorps members serve with their projects for a year: recruiting and coordinating volunteers, addressing challenges and management related to food supply chain, creating systems to collect data and evaluate programs, and growing organizations through storytelling, development, and fundraising. They benefit from professional development and team building in a nationwide cohort. Harvest Against Hunger and the Harvest VISTA Program aim to involve the larger community in addressing food insecurity.

Member Duties : As the Communications and Program Expansion VISTA, the AmeriCorps member will primarily support CJ’s produce purchasing program (Produce Buyers Club) and our communications initiatives. In 2020 we began purchasing excess, imperfect produce from Georgia farmers to distribute through our and other organizations' hunger relief programs. We are continuing to grow the Produce Buyers Club by identifying more farmers with imperfect produce, more organizations that need it, and sustainable models for the program’s continued growth. CJ primarily communicates about our work through our weekly newsletter, social media channels, and at community events. We are constantly improving how we create strategy and structure around communication activities to grow, educate, and engage our audience and stakeholders. The AmeriCorps member will spearhead Produce Buyers Club activities and manage CJ’s communication activities while working to refine our communications goals, strategy, and structure.
