Opportunity Council - FFB - Community Engagement VISTA

The Foothills Food Bank’s (FFB) mission is to distribute quality, nutritious food to community members in need, and to deliver services with respect and dignity. The FFB has provided free supplementary groceries to families in East Whatcom County since 1986. Our Tuesday morning distribution serves an average of 200 families each week. We also deliver groceries to home bound adults and families within the community who are unable to access our weekly distributions. East Whatcom County qualifies as a rural food desert based on the United States Department of Agriculture’s definition. Our community has become increasingly food insecure since COVID-19 and more and more families within the community need our assistance. We will be expanding our programs to include both a second weekly distribution time in the evenings and Saturday distributions in the future. The Opportunity Council VISTA Cohort in Bellingham includes monthly team meetings, Professional Development opportunities, fun team-building events, and 4 annual Days of Service.

Member Duties : The Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC) will support the Foothills Food Bank by enhancing and expanding on the work of our Year 1 CEC. They will work alongside staff members to increase the efficiency of our volunteer program and help to increase volunteer retention by evaluating and tracking program involvement. They will utilize this data to formulate new strategies to improve volunteer retention and to promote a healthy and engaging culture of volunteerism within the Foothills Food Bank. THE CEC will build on the work of the Year 1 VISTA to encourage culturally appropriate health forward choices amongst community members via innovative engaging program development and well-developed partnerships with local agencies such as WSU SNAP-Ed.
