VISTA CHWC Sustainable Housing Engagement Plan

Wyandotte County is home to many families for whom high-quality housing is often out of reach. While CHWC has worked in the community for over 20 years to build over 500 high-quality affordable homes and empower over 400 families to achieve homeownership, the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced or destabilized household incomes for many of our families, placing a threat on their ability to remain safely and stably housed. CHWC's homeownership initiatives serves residents of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, KS, which is home to 165,429 people. The county is one of the highest-poverty counties in the state, with a poverty rate of 20%. (County census data, 2019). 91% of the customers served through CHWC’s homeownership programs are at 80% Area Median Income (AMI) and below, and nearly 50% are at 30% AMI or below (HUD 9902 report, Oct – Dec 2020). By owning or renting a high-quality home, our families have secured a key component of long-term financial stability and provided themselves with a foundation to continue building generational wealth. Through this VISTA project, CHWC seeks to support the financial stability and growth of low-income families by ensuring that they remain safely and stably housed as the community recovers from the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. CHWC will provide $500 per month housing allowance in one of CHWC's rental units. In the case that a CHWC unit is unavailable, CHWC will pay a cash housing stipend directly to the landlord.
