New Beginnings Without Violence and Abuse Development VISTA
New Beginnings is the only domestic and sexual violence crisis center serving Belknap County, New Hampshire. Specialized domestic and sexual violence crisis services are critical in the movement to end violence against women. In the Meeting Survivor’s Needs Shelter Study (2008), 3,400 survivors from eight states were asked what they would have done if the shelter had not existed. Ninety-five percent wrote descriptions that were often poignant and extended, which fell into five general categories: being homeless, losing everything (including their children), a desperate action, uncertainty, and continued abuse/risk of death. These responses speak to the importance of access to specialized services in the Lakes Region. The populations of victims who seek services from New Beginnings are primarily low income. Even for victims fleeing homes with some access to financial resources, leaving an abuser often means losing access to those resources. Over the past several years, New Beginnings has seen an increase in the complexity of issues victims present, and has identified a need to increase staff skills in working with victims presenting clinical issues beyond their capacity and training to address. Advocates are beginning to see second and third generations of families who have been assisted by the agency. Advocates are increasing economic independence programming in an effort to break the cycle of generational poverty and abuse.

Member Duties : To build upon New Beginnings’ capacity to effectively develop productive relationships with its existing donors and to develop and build relationships with New donors. Growing our donor base will expand the financial resources of the organization and will enable New Beginnings to serve more survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking. The New Beginnings Board of Directors is forming a development committee, which will be focused on diversifying agency funding and planning for long-term financial sustainability. The Development VISTA will play a key role in the planning and facilitation of the development committee and its fundraising efforts.
