Eco3.23 Northfield Sustainability Associate VISTA

The City of Northfield has a long history of residents caring deeply about environmental issues and adopted a Climate Action Plan in November 2019 to help the City both mitigate greenhouse gas emissions as well as to build resilience. The transportation sector makes up about 12% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the City of Northfield, but is also an area of disparity. The focus of this position will be to develop low-carbon transportation options with a focus on active transportation accessible to all. Increasing these transportation options address barriers to economic and community participation by low-income households. As a community of 20,000 residents with two liberal arts colleges, we have limited transportation options beyond private vehicles. As an AmeriCorps VISTA member you will work directly with city staff as well as community partners to engage a wide range of community members, especially those that are typically underrepresented in decision making, to assess transportation needs, barriers, and possible low-carbon solutions. In addition to transportation planning, you will work on increasing active transportation for youth by developing some Bike and Walk to School efforts over the 2023-2024 school year. VISTA member will be part of the Ecolibrium3 AmeriCorps VISTA cohort serving in Minnesota. Although each member is serving in a unique position, all cohort members will participate in VISTA specific activities such as regular cohort meetings, collaborative projects, professional development opportunities, and trainings. Additionally, cohort members way work with one community service project of their design.
