Volunteer Medical Clinic VISTA
In September 2020, Catholic Charities returned to its roots and launched a Volunteer Medical Clinic model at the site where it had been operating a medical clinic since 1969. When the clinic opened, it was the first of its kind in offering comprehensive free medical care to immigrants and the poor with no access to quality healthcare. Since the clinic first opened in 1969, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act created greater access to medical care for low-income individuals. Despite the now 20+ government sponsored safety-net clinics in the region, undocumented immigrants still do not have access to reliable, professional, affordable medical care. Catholic Charities Volunteer Medical Clinic currently provides healthcare to about 40 low-income patients per week with a waitlist of about 1,000 eligible patients. The Volunteer Medical Clinic VISTA Volunteer will help build the capacity of Catholic Charities’ new Volunteer Medical Clinic by collaborating with the clinic director to coordinate the team of over 100 volunteers and interns to provide free medical appointments to nearly 1000 qualified low-income patients annually. Our patient population consists of uninsured adults living in Maryland below 250% FPL. We serve primarily undocumented immigrants who speak Spanish as a 1st language. Over the course of the year, the VISTA volunteer will help expand clinic operations to an additional day per week, coordinate the recruiting, training, and scheduling of the volunteer team, collaborate with the Quality Improvement team to assess and implement procedures to improve patient and volunteer satisfaction and track patient outcomes. This VISTA position is a part of Catholic Charities USA’s Family Strengthening Program, a national intermediary project. As a member, you will meet virtually with VISTA Leaders and other VISTAs serving throughout the country, all focused on alleviating poverty.
