Community Schools Initiative (Southeastern Michigan)
 
 
 
United Way for Southeastern Michigan Community Schools effort focuses on a shared holistic vision and approach in developing the school as a community hub that promotes inclusion that builds collaborative partnerships and provide integrated supports that directly impact students and families. Through this community school model, we will work collaboratively with school districts. Through our focus on building stable households, thriving children, we connect families to programs and services to help them meet their basic needs and work to ensure that starting at birth, families have the tools and support needed to make sure their children start school ready to learn and graduate prepared for success in life. Each Community School may use different strategies and activities to improve its school and community. United Way for Southeastern Michigan’s Community Schools model will focus on the following areas: 1) Parent/Family Engagement, 2) Partnership Engagement, 3) Literacy, 4) Wraparound Supports, and 5) Connectivity. We believe healthy and thriving communities' value P.R.I.D.E., ensuring students are Prepared for positive development; have families that are Resilient and Interconnected with local businesses, corporations, and advocacy stakeholders; Diverse in thought and representation and Engaged with community partnerships.

Member Duties : VISTAs will help to build capacity within the school districts by developing tools to assess activities and implement best practices that engage and connect families to programs and services to help them meet their basic needs. Alleviating the barriers of poverty is critical to ensuring that starting at birth, families have the tools and support needed to make sure their children start school ready to learn and graduate prepared for success in life. VISTAs will also support the CS coordinators in connecting organizations to the community schools work and sustaining partnerships and identifying funding opportunities.
