*MCVP – Poverello Center

This project will increase access to housing to low-income individuals in Missoula by developing a system to track in-kind donations to the Poverello Center. In January 2019, the annual Point in Time (PIT) survey of homelessness on one night in Montana counted 1,357 individuals experiencing homelessness across our state. On the same night, our community gathered surveys for a moment-in-time snapshot of 367 individuals who were experiencing homelessness in the City and County of Missoula, meaning 27% of everyone experiencing homelessness that night in Montana resided in Missoula County. Mental health issues and substance use disorders are inextricably linked to homelessness, particularly when they go untreated. More than 10 percent of people who seek substance abuse or mental health treatment in our public health system are homeless. 19 offices of public assistance in rural Montana have closed impacting many families’ ability to access assistance and services including SNAP, Medicaid, Healthy Montana Kids, and TANF. What is needed, therefore, is organizations such as the Poverello Center and other “front door” agencies to help fill in this gap. This VISTA project will move individuals experiencing homelessness out of poverty by streamlining and improving an in-kind donation system, resulting in an overall improvement in our ability to provide food and shelter to individuals experiencing homelessness, increasing these individuals’ capacity to connect to resources, employment and housing. Located in Missoula, MT.

Member Duties : The VISTA will build capacity by streamlining the in-kind donation intake and distribution processes. Poverello generates close to one million dollars’ worth of in-kind donations per year, but currently do not have the ability to track an exact number. The VISTA will work on creating a system enabling the organization to know exactly what in kind donations have been received and is still needed.
