Mentoring Program Coordinator VISTA

Most of the clients served by Catholic Charities of Pittsburgh come from generational poverty and lack the skills, resources, and confidence in themselves to become self-sufficient. Since clients approach us during times of crisis, they are focused on their immediate needs, such as accessing food or avoiding a utility shutoff that might lead to eviction. Our agency is dedicated not only to providing help with basic needs, but also to ensuring that clients leave our doors stronger and more stable than when they entered. To that end, we have launched a 1-on-1 Mentoring Program to provide clients with another layer of support that is focused on longer-term stability. This program supplements ongoing case management services and helps curtail the cycle of poverty in three critical areas: finances, child-rearing, and employment. Volunteers meet with clients twice a month to work on specific, goal-oriented projects. The VISTA member oversees recruitment of qualified mentors, provides program training and policy instruction, facilitates mentor-client matches, and maintains records of client progress and mentor feedback. Data collected from clients is then forwarded to caseworkers to utilize in ongoing services.
