Educational Services VISTA

Esperanza Center Educational Services provides classes in English, Computer and Financial Literacy, and Naturalization Exam preparation. This fall, we will also begin to provide Case Management for our students’ families to help inform and empower them in navigating and strengthening their social support network, and to aid them in meeting self-selected personal, professional, and academic goals. Our classes are taught one-on-on or in small groups by trained volunteer-teachers, as well as in regular, formal classes, taught by ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) professionals. Our bilingual case manager will serve a caseload of 20 families, and our program serves about 150 students per year. We register students for three 10-week semesters per year: fall, winter, and spring. Our classes are held both in-person and online, allowing flexibility in attendance. We utilize a unique curriculum we have developed in-house, which has elements that allow the teachers to tailor instruction according to each student’s self-identified language-improvement goals. Our volunteer-teachers undertake required ongoing training in tutoring ESOL, and our professional teachers are content-certified. We use ServicePoint and the Arizona Self-Sufficiency Matrix as vehicles for data collection and reporting. Our VISTA will be supporting our Case Management component through outreach, helping create internal infrastructure, and data management. They will be supporting our existing Educational component through critical review of teacher training, curriculum, and data management. The VISTA position is a part of Catholic Charities USA’s Family Strengthening Program, a national intermediary project. As a member, you will meet virtually with VISTA Leaders and other VISTAs serving throughout the country, all focused on alleviating poverty.

Member Duties : Our VISTA will use the foundational work from 1st year to continue constructing a program to serve immigrant families more comprehensively. One result of 1st year VISTA efforts is hiring a Case Manager. This 2nd year, our VISTA will support our new Case Management component through helping create new infrastructure, and our existing Educational component through critical review of existing infrastructure. The main focus is to help align these two components. This will require assessment of procedures and protocols for effectiveness in implementation in basic aspects: curriculum, training, recruitment, outreach, and data management. A secondary focus is community engagement. In addition to outreach and recruitment, we have strong, long-term community partners, and our VISTA will provide recommendations for an Educational Services Community Steering Committee. A tertiary focus is fundraising and grant-writing. Our VISTA will continue to support the organization of fundraising procedures.
