CoF FSWCD Development Coordinator VISTA

The AmeriCorps VISTA program in Fairbanks is housed through the City of Fairbanks (CoF). This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, for 1 year. VISTAs receive a monthly living allowance of $1,333 which is paid bi-weekly. At the end of service, they also have the choice between an education award of $6,345 or a cash stipend of $1,800. The VISTA will work directly at Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District. The Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District (FSWCD) is combating poverty by increasing urban farming and reducing food insecurity in the USDA designated “food desert” of South Fairbanks. FSWCD is developing an AFFECT Community Farm project modeled after the Alaska Seeds of Change program in Anchorage, AK. That program provides young adults ages 17-26 that are experiencing homelessness with employment and life skills training, while growing fresh produce for the community. The Fairbanks project seeks to provide similar services for disadvantaged and marginalized populations in the Fairbanks area through a multi-agency partnership with the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, Fairbanks Food Bank, UAF Cooperative Extension and 4H program. This third-year VISTA position will build upon the work of the two previous VISTAs and ensure FSWCD’s programs are able to continue beyond the completion of the VISTA project. The VISTA will assist FSWCD in establishing urban agricultural initiatives that promote sustainable gardening practices in low-income households and service areas. The VISTA will also build capacity for the FSWCD led Interior Alaska Food Network, which is vital to the sustainment of the poverty alleviating programs.
