VYT-Salvation Farms, Communications

PROGRAM: The VT Youth Tomorrow AmeriCorps VISTA Program supports initiatives helping low-income youth & families develop job skills & academic proficiency, build connection to their community, access health & mental health care, find housing, become food secure, and connect with essential services needed to transcend poverty, avoid unhealthy behaviors, reverse the impacts of COVID-19, and ultimately thrive. Website: www.vermontyouthamericorps.org SITE: Salvation Farms builds increased resilience in Vermont’s food system through agricultural surplus management. We serve farms and eaters broadly through our collaboration-based programs. Our activities provide experiential education opportunities, connections within community, and distribution of Vermont’s surplus farm produce to sites serving financially and nutritionally insecure individuals. Salvation Farms’ AmeriCorps VISTA increases local access to community grown food and decreases the amount of food lost on Vermont farms. The VISTA strengthens our public visibility by developing our communications efforts, building our photo and video library, enhancing our web-based presence, improving media relations, streamlining branding resources, and collaborating on community engagement efforts. Engaging with key staff around capacity building efforts, the VISTA ensures the ongoing maintenance, creation, and delivery of public-facing communication and increases community awareness of our mission and impact. Most importantly, the VISTA’s efforts result in community empowerment and nourishment for those most in need. COVID-19: Prior to the pandemic, 11% of Vermonters were food insecure; a November 2020 report shows that now 30% are. The VISTA’s poverty alleviation efforts around increasing gleaning and distribution of nutritious food, focus on the 4 northeastern counties which experience high rates of poverty. Location: Morrisville, VT
