Community Debate Liaison [MCN]

The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University, located in the heart of Minneapolis, Minnesota. We provide academic competitive debate programming to Twin Cities-area middle and high school students. Our mission is to empower debaters to become engaged learners, critical thinkers, and active global citizens who are effective advocates for themselves and their communities. We believe that debate is for everyone. Minnesota has a rich, 120+ year history of extracurricular speech and debate programming. The state has produced many successful speakers on the high school and college level. The academic and social benefits of forensics education are well-known. And yet, by 2004, in the Twin Cities, access to speech & debate programming was functionally eliminated at urban public schools and limited to well-resourced suburban public schools and private schools. To address this disparity, the Minnesota Urban Debate League was formed as part of the larger National Association for Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL) network. Since then, our program has expanded to serve over 1,200 students over multiple specialized programs. Our programming occurs year-round and includes: -Fall: High School National Topic Policy Debate, -Winter: Middle School National Topic Policy Debate -Spring: Spanish Debate League, East African Debate, and Financial Literacy Debate -Summer: Summer speech & debate camp Our vision is for all Minnesota students to have access to debate. Our programs are designed to empower youth and aid in closing the academic opportunity gap. Just a few of our student outcomes include: increasing standardized reading scores by 12-14% (even after controlling for race, income, and previous academic performance), greater enrollment in advanced classes, 98% college acceptance, and range of self-reported outcomes involving social emotional learning, academic skill building, and building connections with the community.

Member Duties : Our VISTA role is designed to build capacity for our fast-growing Spanish Debate League and East African Debate programs. In these programs, education leaders in the Latine and East African communities took the historic debate model and adapted it to suit their community’s needs. These programs have proven popular and successful, and demand is growing quickly. To increase our capacity for meeting these programs’ needs, we must establish more community relationships to increase the qualified judging pool and promote community awareness. The VISTA member will serve as a community liaison, promoting our programs more broadly throughout the Twin Cities area and establishing new relationships within universities, corporate affinity groups, area nonprofits, and more.
