Youth Engagement Facilitator - OCLC

The Orchard Community Learning Center (OCLC) works with youth and the community to assist in changing the food system to provide more nutrition and create a flourishing local food system by supporting Phoenix growers. Our programs make it easier to grow good produce and help the community access it. To further this work, the OCLC is recruiting an AmeriCorps VISTA to help develop, coordinate, and implement its services and learning projects with youth. The VISTA will: (1) Collaborate with OCLC leadership and the Lassen School Culinary/Earth Skills teacher working with K-8 students and their teachers. (2) Coach youth participants participating in the operation of the grocery/deli and school and Spaces gardens. (3) Assist Orchard staff in the last phase of the implementation of an economically sustainable receiving, cooling, and distribution of locally sourced vegetables and fruits. (4) Serve as mentor to youth to identify a specific problem or problems for which they determine an action or actions to address the issue. (i.e. a policy change at the school or district level, a new program, curriculum change, cafeteria food practice, etc.) (5) Prepare material (text/photos/student stories) weekly from each component for use in the Orchard’s social media platforms and newsletter. (6) Build capacity through fund development and planning with Orchard staff on how to carry on with these best practices after VISTA resources are gone. This could include preparation of materials and communications to our base, and outreach to groups/individuals outside of our current base.

Member Duties : The Orchard Community Learning Center (OCLC) works with youth, schools and families to assist in changing the food policies and practices to provide healthy alternatives to the norm. The work is to create and nourish a local food system by supporting Phoenix growers and modeling farming and personal habits needed from local to global. Our programs make it easier to grow good produce and help the community access it. To further this work and increase the impact and sustainability of these programs, the OCLC is recruiting an AmeriCorps VISTA to assist us in finalizing economically sustainable systems for receiving and distributing locally grown food and engaging youth in multiple phases of the work. The VISTA will encourage youth-led responses to effect change and build capacity within Orchard projects.
