Rural Dynamics - Montana Cooperative Development Center

Workforce is critical within all sectors and all communities in Montana. This project was originally developed in response to a statewide shortage of skilled line workers, a demand that continues today. According to a recent survey of the Montana utility industry, there is still a significant need for individuals with the skills provided by the program. Rural Montana has an aging population, and towns are seeing the population decline resulting from young people moving away due to the perceived lack of economic or educational opportunities. At the same time, rural cooperatives provide good-paying jobs with salaries much higher than the state average but struggle to find workforce to fill critical positions in the business and leadership positions. Montana Cooperative Development Center (MCDC) is developing a pre-apprenticeship program to alleviate the workforce shortage and provide opportunities for students to get great careers and education at no cost. The Montana Pre-Apprenticeship Program will develop and implement a pre-apprenticeship program for junior and senior high in rural communities for cooperative careers in partnership with the Montana Council of Cooperatives, the Montana Registered Apprenticeship Program, the Montana Youth Apprenticeship Program, rural high schools, and other community partners. The program will prepare the student to enter the workforce and consider completing the apprenticeship program rather than traditional four-year education. The business served through the program will be engaging in developing their workforce and offer more education for the current and future employees. The results of this project are two-fold. First, the project will establish a pre-apprenticeship program for rural high school students to provide training and education for a high-wage job in their community. Second, it will also create a pipeline of employees and leadership for rural cooperatives and help keep rural Montana strong.

Member Duties : The member will research cooperatives and attend trainings and presentations from MCDC staff and partners; create an outline for the program with tasks, timelines, and roles defined; develop materials for outreach and presentations to partners; and engage with partners at the MT Registered Apprenticeship Program and the MT Youth Apprenticeship to enhance the curriculum, share resources, and build relationships with high schools. MCDC is looking for an applicant that is passionate about rural high school students being able to get on-the-job training, vocational skills, and college credit before graduating high school - eliminating the burden of high-cost education. Students will be presented with the opportunity for a high-wage career in their hometown without having to take large education loans or move to a higher-cost area to live.
