VYT-Bixby Memorial Free Library

PROGRAM: The VT Youth Tomorrow AmeriCorps VISTA Program supports initiatives helping low-income youth & families develop job skills & academic proficiency, build connection to their community, access health & mental health care, find housing, become food secure, and connect with essential services needed to transcend poverty, avoid unhealthy behaviors, reverse the impacts of COVID-19, and ultimately thrive. Website: www.vermontyouthamericorps.org SITE: The Bixby Memorial Free Library, supported by Vermont towns Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Vergennes and Waltham, provides traditional lending services,24/7 Wi-Fi, access to computers, and space for community meetings, tutoring, and other services. We promote childhood literacy through onsite and offsite programs and support adult programming. A large group of volunteers supports our services. Our vision is to create a valued and thriving library that sparks delight in the community as we connect individuals with our goals to help them engage, discover, and learn. Library resources are geared toward literacy, job seeking, skill development, personal health, and cultural enrichment to provide the tools and support to overcome poverty. The VISTA builds capacity by creating an outreach and communication plan to identify community members whose needs are not being met currently by Bixby programming, including low-income youth and rural, farm and migrant farm workers. The VISTA also focuses on grant writing and fundraising for programs focused on further outreach possibilities to underserved communities. COVID-19: The VISTA’s service centers on connecting with and learning about the pre-existing and new needs presented by COVID-19 to the rural and farming parts of our community, as well as creating and launching teen-related engagement programming. Location: Vergennes, VT
