College of Menominee Nation: VISTA Climate/Resource Planning

Menominee County faces considerable challenges to sustainable development and natural resource planning. Each household has an average of three individuals per home and one car available as their main source of transportation. There is only one grocery store in the entire county and the majority of its items are processed foods. In addition, over 35% of the population lives in poverty. College of Menominee Nation's Sustainable Development Institute (SDI) is dedicated to examining sustainability issues and applying them to indigenous models of sustainable development. We are searching for a VISTA member to help us build capacity in the community, locate barriers the community is facing surrounding natural resources, and help find solutions that are culturally-based and sustainable. This VISTA year will offer lots of room for growth, including natural resource management, community development, and indigenous sustainability models. Come join our team and serve as our Tribal Resilience VISTA member!

Member Duties : The VISTA member builds capacity within the Sustainable Development Institute at CMN through networking and partnership building. He/she will work with CMN to increase community knowledge surrounding natural resources and environmental changes through surveys and community events. The VISTA member will coordinate community outreach and education, building the capacity of programs, developing curricula for community events, and identifying new opportunities to raise awareness about climate resilience and natural resource programming in the Menominee nation. The VISTA will support SDI staff to enhance campus sustainability efforts in areas of agriculture, alternative energy, and forest ecology. Working with the team on current and future SDI projects the VISTA will learn about a Tribal College, Tribal communities, and Tribal Nations. This year of service will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about environmental planning, community development, and indigenous sustainability.
