ConnectHome VISTA 2021: Jersey City

The Service Collaborative (TSC) VISTA Program mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to function in organizations, government agencies and educational institutions. Members focus on expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all and creating healthy futures for the residents of low-income communities. Our goals are to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Service Collaborative VISTA program has partner organizations in New York State and across the country. During their term of service members, will receive support from our VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY. Our support includes monthly trainings, a social network of fellow members and daily support from VISTA Leaders.

Member Duties : The Jersey City Housing Authority (JCHA) is the city’s largest provider of affordable senior housing. As part of the ConnectHome initiative, the JCHA is looking for ways to expand digital inclusion within its communities as a way to reduce poverty, as well as educate residents on all possible uses of technology. The JCHA has partnered with the AARP Foundation on an initiative designed to promote social interaction and engagement via connecting to community residents with on-site staff through community calendars and announcements. The ConnectHome Technical Coordinator VISTA will be integral in planning, implementing, and assessing this initiative. The initiative is designed to prevent social isolation among the senior population via distribution of internet-connected devices and digital training. The VISTA will also create a digital literacy plan for residents, implement the distribution of devices, seek further funding, and create a sustainability and expansion plan for the program.
