Eco3.22: Community Action Duluth Construction VISTA

Community Action Duluth began as part of the City of Duluth in 1965 as part of President Johnson’s War on Poverty. In 1982, Community Action obtained nonprofit status and has been providing services to low income people since that time. Community Action Duluth has an annual budget of $2,050,000 and administers government grants in addition to foundation grants, and contracts from government agencies. Community Action Duluth’s new mission is to empower and engage our community to eliminate poverty, and create prosperity and equity in the lives of the people we serve. Community Action Duluth has three categories of programs and services: 1) Asset Building and Financial Services 2) Employment Services including the Stream Corps, Seeds of Success, and Community Construction, and 3) Community Engagement and Leadership Development. Community Construction (CC) is one of our Field Jobs programs. CC is a program that provides jobs to un- and underemployed Duluthians to carry out housing restoration projects in the city of Duluth. Participants of CC earn valuable work experience to put on their resume, job training, and opportunities to engage in our other programs, such as employment and financial coaching. Job training can include flooring, roofing, siding, drywall, tiling, painting, framing, hanging doors and windows, and many more skills, all taught in house by us and a WITC instructor at the beginning of the year. VISTA member will be part of the Ecolibrium3 AmeriCorps VISTA cohort serving in northeastern Minnesota. Although each member is serving in a unique position, all cohort members will participate in VISTA specific activities such as regular cohort meetings, collaborative projects, professional development opportunities, and trainings. Additionally, cohort members will jointly complete one community service project of their cooperative design.

The major goal of labor tracking each phase of the project to use the data for more accurate estimates on future projects. 2) Materials sourcing - To find and create a living list of materials that are safer, greener, and/or cheaper for continued projects. And to cultivate relationships with suppliers emphasizing those who carry local materials. 3) Life Cycle Carbon Accounting - to calculate our carbon impact in the refurbishment of old homes.
