Greater Washington Community Foundation

Beginning July 2021 - 2022, the two AmeriCorps VISTA members will work with the four pillars of literacy success – family, health, community, and early education. We close the achievement gap, address racial inequities, and expand opportunities for Montgomery County’s marginalized children and families at the Children's Opportunity Fund. As a response to virtual learning, we were able to quickly open Educational and Enrichment Equity Hubs for Black, Brown, and lower income families to send children to a safe place during working hours. Helping children read by the end of third grade, the Children’s Opportunity Fund invests in systems change to disrupt generational poverty and racial inequities with a coordinated strategy for public schools, government human services, nonprofits, health care, and early education. Each VISTA member will be supported by professionals in education, nonprofit, community organizing, and social science fields to indirectly close the achievement and opportunity gap. These duties include attending board meetings and webinars from various organizations, conducting focus groups, organizing and managing Read Across America Day for participation from all community stakeholders.
