UWCCR- Read on! Volunteer VISTA

Read On! is 916 Ink’s one-to-one tutoring program that is configured for volunteer tutors to deliver remote lessons to striving readers in first through fourth grade who are behind in grade-level reading. Volunteer tutors deliver remote tutoring to students in the classroom or at home. Students will receive evidence-based reading instruction in one-to-one, 45-minute online tutoring sessions three times a week for a minimum of eight weeks. The Read On! methodologies and curriculum are anchored in the Science of Reading, which is proven to be the most effective method of teaching reading. Additionally, students have the opportunity for online game-style practice application with Tutoring with the Lightning Squad by the Success for All Foundation. Tutoring with the Lightning Squad is a highly engaging, web-based, interactive multimedia tutoring model. Developed by Sirius Thinking, Ltd., and the Success for All Foundation in collaboration with Sesame Workshop, the program is designed to enable struggling readers who read at a first through mid-third grade level to achieve grade-level literacy proficiency by developing skills in fluency, phonics, word blending, spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension through a series of game-like activities. Students are assessed upon entry, exit and mid-program to track their progress. Tutors and staff continuously monitor the student’s progress through each lesson. Lessons can be repeated or omitted as needed. At eight weeks, a student will be assessed to determine if they are eligible to graduate out of the program or whether participation in the program will continue. If further intervention is needed at completion of the program, the student's upcoming teacher will be notified.
