MTCC AmeriCorps Leader - Code Girls United

Code Girls United’s mission is to expand the future career opportunities of 4th-8th grade girls through hands-on experience in coding, technology, and business. The poverty rate of women in Montana is 15.3% primarily due to single parent households. Opportunities for employment at a higher wages are limited by the education of Montana residents, particularly female residents. Technology positions provide women in particular with the ability to work remotely for higher wages. Opportunities for technical training for young girls provide them the self-confidence and skills to pursue further education and join the working world alleviating the cycle of poverty. Statistics from Microsoft and Accenture who have studied the decline in women in Computer Science show that girls have a 72% interest in computer technology at age 11, but that interest decreases to 24% by the time girls reach the 9th grade. Engaging girls in that age range has the greatest results in encouraging girls to pursue Computer Science related courses in High School and College. 62% of girls who participate in programs such as Code Girls United are likely to take college courses in Computer Science.
