*MTCC AmeriCorps Summer Member - YES Youth Empowerment Svcs

YES exists to provide a safe, positive, and beneficial environment for youth during non-school hours where they can grow and learn. We provide an after-school program during the school year, and a summer program during summer months. Our purpose is to provide a safe environment where children can flourish, and to fill in the social-emotional and educational gaps. We are committed to transforming the lives of our youth by providing activities with an emphasis on social, academic, and career needs and the development of healthy leisure time recreational activities. Through the services and programs we offer, youth attain a sense of individual responsibility and a commitment to developing skills needed to be successful members of the community. Our youth also develop a sense of pride and accomplishment in doing their best in any endeavor, valuable interpersonal skills needed in all areas of life, personal accountability and responsibility, working as a team, communication and listening, and academic skills. Along with the mental and emotional aspects of our program we provide meals and snacks to all as well as clothing and personal necessities to those who need it. The community of Anaconda-Deer Lodge County is lacking in safe and beneficial places for youth to spend their time outside of school hours. Daycare is limited for younger children, and older children often end up home alone or elsewhere unsupervised playing video games or other hobbies with little opportunity for advancing social and academic skills. We strive to break the poverty cycle by focusing on learning throughout the summer, discovering career opportunities that await, encouraging self-confidence, and giving youth skills that will help them remain in school and be successful.

Member Duties : The member will plan and lead STEM projects, arts and crafts, and team building activities; develop and maintain our Community Garden space; assist youth in communication and money management skills at a weekly Community Market; and mentor youth through one-on-one discussions, career exploration activities, and curriculum development. In addition, the member will lead and teach structured outdoor field excursions, encourage a team mindset and facilitate good sportsmanship, teach nutrition and cooking basics to all ages, supervise field trips to science centers, and collaborate with community leaders to organize a career week. The member will plan engaging activities for the Crazy-8s Math Club. The member will read aloud to younger children, guide older children in reading activities, and assist in teaching reading comprehension in fun ways. These services are essential because we estimate that 70% of our school year enrolled youth come from families falling under the poverty line.
