Eco3.21 Fond du Lac Reservation FoodSovereignty Summer VISTA

The Fond du Lac Reservation is located next to Cloquet, MN just 20 miles southwest of the city of Duluth. The Treaty of 1854 between the United States Government and the Lake Superior Band of Chippewa established the Reservation, comprising 101,400 acres. A mission of the Fond du Lac Band is to lead and coordinate the community's efforts to rebuild the local food system in order to improve community health and resiliency. This mission is promoted through the Fond du Lac Bimaaji’idiwin Food Sovereignty Initiative, which envisions a thriving, resilient community empowered through tribal sovereignty, environmentally responsibility, and a holistic food system rooted in Anishinaabe values. The Gitigaaning ("The Place of the Gardens") Farm is an extension of this vision. As an AmeriCorps Summer Associate VISTA, this position is centered around the tangible advancement of this vision over a 10-week period.
