Stewards VISTA: WCU Center for Public Lands

The Center for Public Lands at Western Colorado University is a training and resource center that brings together students, land managers, and communities with a goal to develop creative responses to contemporary land management challenges. The Center connects students to government agencies and nongovernmental entities in ways that help move those organizations’ missions forward while meeting students’ academic requirements. Three key elements of the Center’s approach are technical assistance through faculty expertise and research, student-led research and projects to increase organizational capacity, and workshops and events for dialog which furthers management practices that are scientifically driven and culturally sustainable. Current initiatives include: -A field school on collaborative management with tribal communities focused on Bears Ears National Monument. -Stakeholder engagement and scientific study of the largest timber sale on the Gunnison National Forest. -Data collection and public engagement on recreation activities in Southwest Colorado, including winter use, motorized use, and wilderness. -Planning for dispersed camping on the Gunnison National Forest. -Student-led research and study on ungulate migration, wilderness monitoring, campground management, public land user fee systems, online environmental education, wolf restoration, and more.
