*MTCC VISTA Summer Associate Get Fit Great Falls

Get Fit Great Falls promotes the benefits of healthy lifestyles to the citizens of Great Falls and Cascade County through a unified community effort that encourages cultural and system change. Overall, 47.4% of Great Falls public school students rely on free and reduced lunch and 2.5% are homeless at some point during the school year, according to data tracked and reported federally by Great Falls Public Schools. In the last school year, Great Falls Public Schools served 955,533 free meals and another 100,142 reduced meals to local economical disadvantaged youth. That same need continues throughout the summer. A GFPS food truck delivered 13,960 meals at four locations last summer. By partnering with Get Fit's Park Pals program, the summer food program attracts more students. By having planned activities that are a mix of craft projects, science experiments and active play at food truck sites, more children are attracted to come. Park Pals activities also helps reduce the stigma of receiving a free meal because it's part of an overall fun experience.

Member Duties : Under the supervision of the City Park and Rec staff, the AmeriCorps VISTA would develop activities that require inexpensive or no equipment and art and science programs. Having diverse activities will draw more kids and capture the attention of children with different interests. The VISTAs will coordinate with the school district’s food truck and a program that gives books to kids in parks throughout the summer. The three programs together will help each other build an audience. Activities will be in low-income neighborhood parks. In past years, Park Pals have expanded the number of meal sites where free sack lunches are given to kids in low-income neighborhoods. With four summer associates, Park Pals would hope to add as many as six food sites to the school district's summer nutrition program. The VISTAs will also track the number of students participating in the program.
